Can a Good Mentor Actually Cripple Your Success?

We used to think that having a good mentor meant that we would become more successful.

Defining the word “good”, in this context means being everything, to everyone.

We found out the hard way that good mentors create co-dependent and unsuccessful organizations.

Good mentors can actually cripple your success.

We’ve had good mentors.

They babied us, held our hands, checked in with us every day and stole from us the opportunities to grow and learn to overcome adversity.

They wanted to be successful themselves, but couldn’t let go of their need for control, so they had to be involved in everything we did to grow our business.

With them, we were not very successful.  Neither were they.

We’ve also had great mentors.

Although they provided a road map type blue print about how they were becoming more and more successful, they were hands off in our own day to day operations.

When we spoke, we never expected them to solve our problems or do things for us.

They gave us feedback on our marketing or approach, but they allowed us to learn what worked and what doesn’t on our own.

They lead by example and invested most of their time doing revenue producing activity themselves.

We followed suit and as a result, made lots of money and enjoyed the process of becoming leaders for thousands.

The greatest work of a leader is not to struggle for you, but to assure you, that your struggles are certainly worthwhile. One of our mentors John Jackson says that.

Appreciate a great sponsor.

Afterall, good is not always great.
